Amazon.com Review: Access office e-mail, run company applications from home or on the road, and transfer files to an Internet server with pcAnywhere 10.0 Host & Remote. While version 10.0 retains the application's core functionality, most of the handholding wizards of the previous version have been removed. Inexperienced home users should note that pcAnywhere is essentially a business product, as its complexity will leave novices flummoxed.
That said, there are some noteworthy new features in version 10.0, including a simpler user interface, better handling of encryption, support for the excellent LiveUpdate facility, and tighter overall security. If you run Windows NT or 2000, you can now take advantage of "installation packages" that add customized versions of pcAnywhere to other remote systems.
It might lack wizards, but once set up, pcAnywhere 10.0 is pretty easy to use. Merely connect to a remote host PC and the application's desktop appears in a window on your remote PC. Once connected, you can do most of the things you could if you were actually sitting in front of the other PC. Security wasn't great in the previous version, but that's been rectified in this release--pcAnywhere now has more security features than any other remote control application, especially if you're running Windows 2000. The application is nearly hackproof, too. It can now recognize even the slightest change to its DLLs, registry entries, and executables, and it won't work if it discovers modifications.
While less experienced home users will probably be better off with products like LapLink, pcAnywhere remains a full-featured and sophisticated option for the businessperson who needs to operate a PC from afar. --Roger Gann
Amazon.com Review: Two computers often aren't better than one, and any PC user who's suffered from leaving files at the office will love pcAnywhere 9.2 from Symantec. While it requires a strong learning curve for us non-nerds, the payoff is substantial for anyone who brings work "away."
Have you ever experienced the endless tech-support phone call, with frustration building as you're unable to articulate what's happening to your machine? Systems administrators can smoothly install the software on any machine they like, and then "look over the shoulder" of any user--even from another building--and take over operations as needed to fix problems or explain what's wrong. This powerful, Windows 2000 certified utility allows users unprecedented access to computers as close as a parallel-cable length or as far away as the Internet will allow.
Security features, including CheckPoint VPN-1 compatibility, ensure that bad guys won't run rampant over data. Those of us who aren't system administrators will love the flexibility of manipulating files and running programs remotely; if you've just sat through a long commute only to remember you left a crucial spreadsheet at work, you can still take your shoes off and relax.
There's a bit more to learn here than the average software package, though; those used to leaving all but the business applications to the IS nerds will find this a bit daunting at first. A bit of patience will pay off in increased productivity and smoother workflow, and Symantec successfully safeguards against the worst problems newbies can cause. If you feel like you need to be everywhere at once, let pcAnywhere 9.2 take you outside the traditional network to work where you want. --Rob Lightner

Amazon.com Review: Remotely accessing computers--whether from the next desk over or in a remote office thousands of miles away--is an essential part of business life. Keeping things running smoothly and safely, Symantec's pcAnywhere 10.5 allows users to work where they like without worrying about slow file transfers or malicious hackers. The package is designed for two sets of users: help desk staffers who want to watch what their clients are doing or even take over operations remotely, and mobile professionals who need to access files or run programs while far from their desks.
Installing and setting up the software can be tricky for novices, so most users should have competent IT staff on hand to take care of glitches. Once installed, it's easy to remotely control machines or quickly drag and drop files via cable or modem using the simple, intuitive interface. Essentially, the remote machine opens a window into the host computer to watch or take over its functioning. While this may take a bit of adjustment at first, it quickly becomes second nature.
The security features for pcAnywhere are strong, varied, and impressive, including basic authentication, roaming network search for unauthorized connections, and comprehensive logging. IT professionals will appreciate the rebootless install feature, which lets them put the software on employees' computers transparently. Remote access should be safe and painless, and pcAnywhere 10.5 is both. --Rob Lightner
